                                                                 Teaching Artist Initiative

Queens Council on the Arts is pleased to announce a new professional development opportunity for Queens-based teaching artists and artists who want to become teaching artists. The Teaching Artist Initiative provides extensive Arts in Education training: how to set education goals, develop a curriculum, manage a classroom, budget projects, plan partnerships, establish networks, and so on.

The program will comprise four evening workshops tailored to the specific needs of the participants. The workshops will take place in late April, May, and early June. There will be a culminating networking event in June.

To be eligible for the Teaching Artist Initiative, you must be a Queens resident and artist, demonstrate a commitment to Arts in Education, and be willing to mentor other Queens-based artists/teaching artists in the future. Full-time students are not eligible to apply. Applications will be evaluated by a panel of consultants in the Arts in Education field. The application (PDF form) and supplemental material postmark deadline is Friday, April 4, 2008. Do not email applications. Notification will go out on April 11, 2008. If you have questions before the submission deadline, please call Lisa M. Gutting at (718) 647-3377 ext. 12 or email qcaeducation@gmail.com .

High School to Art School Portfolio Development Program
The High School to Art School Portfolio Development Program (HS2AS)
identifies and selects talented and motivated arts students from Queens
high schools and offers them significant additional out-of-school arts training, portfolio preparation, and guidance toward a career in the arts. Instructional and guidance support for artistically talented students in Queens
public high schools is currently severely limited. Most students are not aware of the many careers in the arts and the types of training which would prepare them for those careers.  Nor are they offered the training and preparation needed at the secondary level that would allow them to compete successfully for admissions to reputable Art Schools that would train them for these careers. The High School to Art School Portfolio Program seeks to fill this void for these students many which come from underserved communities or economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Arts in the Schools Grant Program

The Arts in the Schools Grant Program supports creative arts in education (AIE) partnerships among schools, artists, and/or cultural institutions in the borough of Queens in the form of matching grants up to $5,000. The goal of this program is to build capacity at the local level of schools and their partners (artists and arts/cultural organizations) to conduct successful AIE programs that contribute to school improvement by using the arts to enhance teaching and learning.  This program encourages and supports schools in integrating the arts (visual arts, theatre, music, dance, etc.) with their curriculum.  All Queens public, private, parochial and charter schools, grades Pre K – 12, are eligible to apply for this grant.

Mentor Program

Queens Council on the Arts has developed a new Mentor Program to support the Arts in the Schools Grant Program.  Grant application mentors are now available to help Arts in the Schools Grant applicants develop their grant applications by supporting them in developing their arts-based curriculum, helping them define their goals and objectives, guide them in securing possible matching funds, helping shape their budgets, reviewing their completed applications, and more.  We offer mentors at no cost to the school however the following stipulations will apply:

  1. Only schools that have completed their applications will have access to a mentor.
  2. The mentor is available for 1 hour paid for by Queens Council on the Arts.  After that 1 hour session, the school may opt to meet with the mentor for a longer period of time at their own expense.
  3. Meeting with a mentor does not guarantee funding.
  4. Deadline for Mentoring:  November 2, 2007

Call Lisa Gutting (718) 647-3377 ext. 12 to inquire about mentors.
