Individual Artist
Initiative
By invitation only
Queens Council on the Arts realizes the
important role individual artists serve
as leading citizens in communities where
they live and work. QCA feels there is a
need to stabilize the creative citizen
in the community.
QCA’s ongoing commitment to individual
artists to help them develop skills
needed to achieve artistic goals is
realized through the Queens Community
Arts Fund regrant program. QCA has added
a new opportunity as a component to the
regrant program, the Individual Artist
Initiative (IAI).
IAI is designed to assist artists, whose
artistic talents have been recognized
through grants, fellowships or awards
within the last five years, in the next
level of development of their careers in
the arts, enabling artists to take on
the job of self management. Through
professional development opportunities
for individual artists, this program is
designed to provide a structured
training for artists. Individual artists
will be provided with the opportunity to
mentor with a professional consultant in
a field in which the artist identifies
as needed in building skills to
successfully exist in a world that
rewards business know - how and
marketing expertise.
With IAI, QCA’s goal is to help artists
stabilize themselves as arts
professionals by developing specific
skills that will support their careers
in the arts. Artists are aware of the
available resources but are not often
able to afford the services of a one on
one professional consultation in areas
such as marketing. This initiative is
designed to give the artists the
opportunity to work one on one with a
professional consultant in any area the
artist feels would help develop and
would impact their professional growth.
This offering is an opportunity to
artists that have shown a commitment to
their work, in particular, artists that
have already received recognition of
their artwork. This is not an award for
artists just entering their field.
Artists must be able to identify and
build skills needed to reach career or
project goals.
Through a competitive application
process, individual artists will be
invited to apply for this development
opportunity with submission of a letter
of intent one month prior to an
application submission. The application
will consist of a biographical
information sheet, artistic statement
containing a record of professional
activity and achievement, a 1 page
narrative explaining the need for this
type of support and why this support is
important at this time to the
development of the applicant’s artistic
career.
They will co-create a guided plan to
build capacity for their artistic
careers with their assigned consultant.
The recipients will be provided
opportunities to attend peer meetings
throughout the year. At the end of the
year, the awardees will be asked to
evaluate the program with a brief
description of the work accomplished
with this award indicating impact on
career development.
Applicants must
• be a Queens resident
• demonstrate commitment to this program
• not be enrolled as a full time student
• demonstrate past achievements
