2018 QCA ArtHotel Residency Program
Meet the Artists
The QCA ArtHotel residency is intended to give artists a safe place to focus on their work in the public realm, build different audiences, and be seen making work within the Queens community. In turn this will give access to the public to a working artist’s process. This residency is also intended to build the value of local working artists in an attempt to revise the narrative of displacement due to gentrification and development borough-wide.
As the organizer of this residency, QCA’s view is that artists are creative and valuable community members who are often experts at creative problem solving and encouraging neighbors to interact, in addition to being specialists who make works of art. The public will be invited into the artist’s “hotel” studios to experience the creative process at various times during the residency. The hotels to be acting as hosts for the 2018 QCA ArtHotel Residency include The Paper Factory Hotel, located in LIC and SpringHill Suites NY LaGuardia located in Corona. The QCA website will have updates for ongoing activities as each of these participating hotels for the duration of the 3 month residency.
Congratulations to visual artists A. King McCarty and Kamille Ejerta. The artists were chosen from a pool of applicants based upon criteria that included artistic excellence, a public engagement experience and a clear proposal of art activity to happen during the residency.
A. King McCarty is a multidisciplinary artist and writer living in Queens. As the creator of Splendid Astoria, AKM produces art based on all the details, both small and large, that make Queens such a magical place to call home. Recent exhibitions include the Plaxall Gallery, Queens, Artists Image Resource Gallery, Pittsburgh, PA and the Backlot Arts Festival, Queens. AKM lives near Astoria Park with a beloved husband and many, many plants, is a proud volunteer with the Astoria Park Alliance and a member of Long Island City Artists.
Kamille Ejerta, otherwise known by her street name, " OGMillie " is an NYC based visually impaired Street-Pop artist with a vintage flair. She focuses on the inspirational hard work that iconic international figures are known for. Her art is most recognized by the medium of acrylic painted portraits on vintage decorative mirrors. After experiencing a vision-threatening emergency, art became a savior to OGMillie at a time when she needed hope and found her escape through art.
