While the quality of your artwork is an important element to your career, project planning is often more important to a successful grant application. Participants of this workshop will learn best practices for planning and acquiring funding for their creative projects.

QCA’s Grants and Resource Manager, Lynn Lobell will share tools for project planning and facilitate discussions by Queens Arts Fund award winning individual artist Mark Salinas and composer and Multicultural Sonic Evolution artistic director, Yui Kitamura who will talk about their experiences of what worked and what did not work for them when planning their successfully funded art projects.  Organizations and individual artists alike will benefit from this discussion.

As  QCA's  Grants and Resource Director, Lynn Lobell has helped plan projects for QCA since 1999 and has also facilitated panels for the Queens Arts Fund. Lynn has served on grant maker discussion panels through out New York City, facilitated the Queens Poet Laureate Poet selection process for the Queens Borough President and has served as a consultant for NYFA's Dr. Hours for filmmakers.



Born in rural Ohio to Italian and Bolivian immigrants, New York City artist Mark Salinas identifies with pragmatic approaches to art & design dialogues. He believes artists must share a communicable universality to be relevant and hold an interdisciplinary business sense to flourish. Both commercial and community creativity require an ‘audience as ingredient’ approach.

Salinas is the Owner of Arrows Up (www.arrowsup.com), a design/fabrication/installation business specializing in retail window displays, costumes, and marketing props.  Clients have included global entities such as Chanel, Macy’s, and Nike, as well as non-profit organizations such as The Children’s Aid Society, The National Kidney Foundation, and Tzu Chi Buddhist Foundation.

In 2013, Salinas founded 7Train Murals (www.7trainmurals.org) as a community-driven mural organization dedicated to revitalizing vacant and vandalized public spaces in neighborhoods along the 7Train subway in Queens. To date, over 7500 sq. ft. of public space has been revitalized in the borough of Queens by over 150 volunteers and a dozen corporate sponsors. Summer 2016 will mark expansion into Manhattan, serving 34th Street Hudson Yards all the way to Flushing Main Street.

Yui Kitamura is a versatile composer of solo, chamber, and orchestral music in various styles including classical, jazz, pop, film, and theatre. Ms. Kitamura’s original compositions and arrangements have been performed at such venues as New York’s Lincoln Center and Joe’s Pub, Berlin’s Akademie der Künste, Kiev’s National Catholic Cathedral, and Tokyo’s Sumida Triphony Hall and Suntory Hall. Her music was nominated for a 2011 Hollywood Music in Media Award in the classical/orchestral genre and was performed by world renowned bassist Gary Karr for the Emperor and Empress or Japan.

Formerly the Assistant Director of Opera at the Musica e Arte Festival in Tolentino, Italy, Ms. Kitamura is currently Artistic Director of MuSE (Multicultural Sonic Evolution), a musicians' group that creates unique concerts and shows with artists from different fields. She holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in composition from The Juilliard School and a Master of Fine Arts from New York University’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at the Tisch School of the Arts. She is also the producer of a group called Musitravel which produces concerts in Japan every summer collaborating artists from the world. In addition to her musical activities, she works as a graphic designer and photographer.
