Swimming Upstream is a one-act chamber opera whose main character is a retired biology teacher from Rumford, Maine—and/or a water goddess. The piece is scored for soprano and onstage mixed quintet, with minimal stage setting plus pre-recorded audio and projections. Weaving science, politics, regional and family history, the work challenges the audience to consider our relationship with water.
