Home Scar contemplates the intimate and unstable relationship between humans and the shoreline on the Rockaway Peninsula—a sanctuary and breeding ground for shorebirds and sea life and popular recreational hub with an omnipresent military history. As a collection, repeated imagery and textual elements evolve into a unique visual language that tugs at the experience of coastal dwellers as they embrace, rebuild, and refuse to abandon their ephemeral home. While elements of fantasy reflect the psychological impact of environmental trauma, the prominence of figures throughout the work elicits questions about how our human-affinity for a place can contribute to its demise.

Heather Simon is a California native with an MFA in creative writing and literary translation from Queens College. Her writing and visual art often converge and has been published in Newtown Literary, The Rumpus, Nomadic Journal, Ink Brick, Blunderbuss Magazine, and others. She's participated in group shows at Plaxall Gallery, DeFord Gallery, Local Project, and Shoestring Press. She teaches writing and literature at Queens College and Queensborough Community College.
