Tomal Hossain (New Work Grantee) Graveside Bouquet

"Graveside Bouquet" is a suite of songs in the Bengali language (with one special exception) by the writer, poet, composer, activist, and revolutionary Kazi Nazrul Islam. The suite's primary principle of musical organization is a piano accompaniment that fuses together the forms and aesthetics of disparate musical genres including jazz, lieder, maqam, and raga music. The lyrical content of the songs, for which English translations and explanations will be provided and narrated, progresses from an exploration of the first hints of romantic interest, to utter infatuation, and eventually uninhibited sorrow giving into bitter regret and self-destruction. The musical presentation will be preceded by a short lecture on Nazrul. Following the performance, there will be a reception with refreshments in the Church lounge.
