2019 ArtPort Residency

Portraits of Contemporary travel
April - June 2019

Artist Holger Keifel

Artist Holger Keifel

A contemporary portrait of traveling through the historic Marine Air Terminal by Queens-based artist, Holger Keifel.

Photographer Holger Keifel is interested in documenting people at their most authentic. His portraits present his subjects simply as they are – without staging or manipulating the image. By creating a series – as he has done with professional boxers as well as 9/11 responders – Holger looks to tell a story of the people he photographs.

This project explores what it means to travel today. Holger invites visitors into his studio to sit for a portrait and to share personal stories of their travels with him. This collection of photographs and interviews will create a snapshot of the diverse group of contemporary travelers that fly into and out of New York City.

The public is encouraged to visit the studio space and sit with the artist for a portrait to be included in the final project. Studio hours will be updated every week and posted below and in the rotunda.
