Artist Davi Leventhal

A social practice project by Queens-based artist
Davi Leventhal in the historic Marine Air Terminal.

Drawing on his Brazilian heritage, artist Davi Leventhal seeks to strengthen communities through his art. Continuing his family’s tradition, he creates fuxicos (foo-SHEE-koohs), a textile decoration often made from fabric scraps that has its roots in the Northeast of Brazil. The name of this craft shares its root with the Portuguese word fuxicar, which translates to “gossip”, and the activities often go hand in hand, with participants sharing stories while they work.

It is with this dual meaning in mind that Davi invites visitors to join him in making at least two fuxicos: one to keep, and one which will be added to the ever-growing fuxico tapestry installed in the studio space. He will teach the simple fuxico-making technique to visitors and invite them to share stories while reflecting on what community means to them.
